Streisand criticized for high tix prices

Italian consumer groups want authorities to cancel Barbra Streisand's concert in Rome next month because of excessive ticket prices.

The Adusbef and Codacons groups urged the city of Rome and the Italian Olympic Committee to deny permission for Streisand to perform at the Stadio Flaminio on June 15. It is the 65-year-old singer's first-ever concert in Italy and the start of her European tour.

The ticket prices, which range from just under $200 to more than $1,200, are "absurd and shameful," the groups said in a statement Monday.

The 24,000-seat stadium, owned by the city and managed by the Committee, "is public property and cannot be used for immoral deals that are shameful to a civilized country," the statement said.

Concert organizers weren't immediately available for comment.

All but the cheapest tickets were available for purchase Tuesday on the Internet.

Streisand's monthlong European tour also includes concerts in Austria, France, Ireland and Britain.

For Barbra Streisand fans, it was the news they had been awaiting for more than a decade.

But their excitement at the prospect of the singer coming to Britain for the first time in 13 years quickly turned to disappointment after it emerged that tickets would cost up to £500.

The cheapest seats for Streisand's concert at the O2 Arena, formerly the Millennium Dome, in Greenwich, south-east London, will cost £100.

advertisementTour promoters defended the high prices, claiming that the concert on July 18 would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "Seeing Barbra Streisand in concert is a pretty momentous occasion that ranks up there with seeing Sinatra or Elvis," said a spokesman. "If you think that FA Cup final tickets are going for £1,600, you get some sort of context."

The 65-year-old singer will be backed by a 58-piece orchestra in the show, which will also take place in Vienna, Paris, Nice and Dublin.

Part of the proceeds will go to the Barbra Streisand Foundation, which supports charitable causes.

Tickets go on sale on Friday but fans are threatening to boycott the concert because of the high costs. One woman posted on a fans' website: "I've gone off her now. What a rip-off! Fans waiting forever for a concert and she does this!"

The legendary singer, who turned 65 this week, is lined up to play a series of gigs at the Millenium Dome now called The O2 Venue in July, with tickets expected to be priced at a staggering £200 a time.

Her return which is expected to become a sell-out within minutes of the tickets going on sale, is likely to be a memorable night - but spare a thought for the staff who will charged with attending to her exacting demands, which could set new standards for diva like on British shores.

When she appeared in Philadelphia to relaunch her live career in September, she insisted on a police dog unit sweeping the auditorium before her sound check, not to mention metal detectors at every door.

The so-called 'rider' which contains all her back-stage requirements from the US gig, which was posted on an American website, included astonishingly detailed information down to the detail of the upholstery on the sofas.

Streisand, who has recorded over 60 albums and her team required five living room sets - fabric covered - "no vinyl please", ten floor lamps "Torchierre style", 35 folding banquet tables and 150 folding chairs.

There was also detailed information about the number and type of locks on the doors, although organisers at the venue were warned that her production team would also need 120 bath sized towels "immediately upon arrival".

But it is her security arrangements for Streisand, who did not perform in public for 27 years, owing to stage fright, that are likely to raise eyebrows the most.

This stated that plain clothed guards should be "neatly dressed in dark jackets, blazers or sweaters".

The leaked rider in the US stated: "This tour requires metal detectors at all entrance doors, including backstage and all employee entrances. These must be actively manned throughout the entirety of the show day and the performance.

Also there will need to be a thorough inspection of the facility by a police K9 prior to sound check."

A source said: "She is being lined up for three nights at the dome - it will be worth millions and the tickets will sell out immediately."

Streisand, who has a child Jason, from her first marriage to Elliott Gould, has previously faced reports that she was facing legal action from angry fans when she announced her tour last year - as they insisted they had forked out a fortune on what they thought were her last ever performances on a previous tour. She told fans she was quitting touring for good in 1999.

The singer was the second most successful live act in the US last year making over £46m pounds from just 20 shows as she staged her first tour since 1994. The average price of a ticket was £145 with some seats selling for nearly £400.

She was supported on that tour by Il Divo, who backed her on some of the songs.

The star, who has sold more than 70 million records worldwide, claimed she was donating £5.3 million from the tour to charitable causes, but sparked controversy when she repeatedly mocked George Bush in a sketch during the show.

Last time Streisand toured in the UK in 1994, the hype backfired as frantic touts desperately tried to sell tickets for her concert below face value.

Advance publicity which had seemed to bill the concert as a sell out was blamed for putting people off at the time, but she still received a standing ovation when she took the stage.

After receiving ecstatic reviews for her recent U.S. concert tour, Academy Award winner Barbra Streisand will perform in Europe this summer.

The concert — co-directed by Streisand and Richard Jay-Alexander — will play London, Austria, France and Ireland. Additional tour dates will be announced shortly.

In a statement Streisand said, "What a joy it will be to perform in so many wonderful countries for the first time. I can't wait to experience these different audiences and different cultures."

Streisand will be backed by a 58-piece orchestra. Concertgoers can expect to hear such tunes as "Evergreen," "People," "The Way We Were" and "Don't Rain on My Parade."

Designated proceeds from the tour will support Streisand's philanthropic initiatives and will be distributed through The Streisand Foundation.

A live recording of Barbra Streisand's recent concert tour will arrive in stores May 8 on the Columbia label. LOS ANGELES — While half of Hollywood was making its way back from TomKat's Italian wedding, what seemed like the other half was seated in the front two rows of the Staples Center Monday night to catch the final performance of Barbra Streisand's 2006 tour.
But was the sold-out concert truly her last?

She confirmed that it was only "the last time I'm ever ... going to wear this dress."

Getting a chuckle from her audience, Streisand shot back, "What did you think I was going to say?"

In fact, near the end of the show, Streisand confirmed she has been approached to sing in China and is considering "maybe six more" (shows) in Europe.

Among the famous faces in the crowd: Leonardo DiCaprio and his mother, Irmalin; Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson; Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell; Sidney Poitier; Rob Lowe; David Hyde Pierce; Ben Stiller and his wife, Christine Taylor; Meg Ryan; Rosie O'Donnell; Sydney Pollack; Diahann Carroll; Shirley MacLaine; Streisand's ex-husband, Elliott Gould; and Jeff Bridges, who escorted his elderly mother, Dorothy, to her seat.

"Her optimism" was MacLaine's favorite part of Streisand's concert. "But the best part was just finding my seat."

The only two celebrities Streisand said hello to from the stage were Barry Manilow and her "dear friend, Q" — as in music producer Quincy Jones.

But she did shine the spotlight on two female Democratic politicos from California in the crowd: U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer of California and incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was seated in front of Bill Maher.

"What a House — and the Senate, too," Streisand quipped, mimicking the same line Billy Crystal delivered two weeks ago at a tribute to Tony Bennett.

Streisand said that when she made 1976's A Star Is Born, there were no women in the Senate; 16 will serve in the new term.

The singer happily responded to many expressions of love from the audience. Only once did she have to admonish the overly excited crowd, playfully scolding, "Don't talk amongst yourselves."

The usually guarded Streisand, 64, dropped a few tidbits about her personal life.

She expressed her gratitude in being back in L.A., where she could sleep in her bed and walk in her garden and "get a sunburn in November." Temperatures reached the 90s on Monday.

Though no mention was made of her husband, James Brolin, she said son Jason Gould, 39, recently purchased a home, which, she said, "I helped him paint."

She also said mother and son often begin their mornings by analyzing each other's dreams.

During her three months on the road performing, she said, her own house was being remodeled.

She had intended to spend her first day back in L.A. at the Pacific Design Center to select new tiles but instead made visits to her favorite eateries.

Among her stops: Malibu Seafood, Il Pastaio restaurant and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

"I never got to the Design Center, but I got a taste of L.A.," she said, raving, "Fabulous. Fabulous."

She also cracked several jokes about her age, expressing gratitude for a teleprompter. She blamed "a senior moment" for nearly prematurely jumping into a song. And later, she slipped on her reading glasses and complained of "a cramp in my calf" while sitting at a piano to play the first song she ever wrote. Her musical guests, "popera" quartet Il Divo, contributed their own jokes about her advanced years — mostly about enjoying her music since they were little boys in their various countries.

Streisand ended the evening with a version of Happy Days Are Here Again, explaining that the original was written after the stock market crash of 1929, which launched the Great Depression. But, she said, "the people have spoken," referring to the Democratic victory in this month's elections, and "my depression is over."

Scalpers who stood out in the downpour outside the Air Canada Centre today said tickets to the sold out Barbara Streisand concert tonight were readily available.
While he wouldn’t give a specific price, one scalper said tickets would probably go below face value, as he sat in his black Maserati counting green bills.

Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster originally ranged from $85-$550.

A number of luxury cars drove up to the ACC and made a deal with the scalpers in their vehicle to avoid the rain. Meanwhile, tickets were still selling online at eBay and Craigslist. One seller, who had no bids on eBay, was asking $1,200 for a pair of floor seats, while others were offering the tickets for face value or even below.

Tickets for the second show Friday were also selling for near face value.

Music Overpowers Streisand's Many Missteps

Barbra Streisand took a carefully plotted step down from the imperial pedestal she has occupied for decades at Madison Square Garden last night and stumbled. The biggest miscalculation was the appearance, late in the show, of a George W. Bush impersonator (Steve Bridges) who Ms. Streisand, an ardent Democrat, interrogated in a tone that tried to be witty, and failed.

How would the president erase the national debt? Sell Canada; they don’t use half of it, he replied. “If I cared about polls,” he remarked, “I would have run for President of Poland.” And so on.

The tepid segment mercifully ended after the two joined voices for an unfunny spoof of the famous Judy Garland-Streisand duet of “Get Happy,” and “Happy Days Are Here Again.”

When Ms. Streisand stopped talking and started singing, she was her old self.

Accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra, she performed more than two dozen songs that encompassed most of her career. Missing were her hits with the Bee Gees, with whom she reunited on her last studio album, “Guilty Pleasures” (Columbia), and songs from her film “Yentl.”

Most heavily represented was “Funny Girl,” (both the show and the movie) in a thrilling end of Act 1 suite that peaked with three ballads: “The Music That Makes Me Dance,” “My Man,” and “People,” all beautifully sung.

One of the pleasures of a Streisand concert is hearing this diva of divas live, her voice unembellished by “improvements” carried out in the recording studio.

In her drive for technical perfection, Ms. Streisand has a longstanding tendency to apply too many coats of aural varnish to her records.

She should realize that sounding like an imperfect human being is more expressive than trying to sound like God, and her singing last night was frequently magnificent. Her voice is fuller than it used to be and still drips with the juice most singers begin to lose at 50. (Ms. Streisand is 64).

Another misstep was the choice of Il Divo, the operatic boy band, as her musical guests. While this multilingual, multinational quartet of singing mannequins, assembled by the diabolically market-savvy impresario Simon Cowell, belts in tune, they have the emotional spontaneity of robots in tuxedos.

An early low point of the show was their arrival on stage to bombard Ms. Streisand with smarmy flattery. Let’s hope she never records with these pretenders to the kitsch pop throne of Andrea Bocelli.

Befitting an event that suggested a one-woman Super Bowl in which the star competed with her legend, the concert was packed with distracting bells and whistles. A useless question-and-answer session in which she responded to randomly selected audience questions wasted precious time. During the Bush impersonation, a solitary heckler so annoyed Ms. Streisand that she lost her temper and hurled an obscenity.

A Barbra Streisand concert should be about singing. That’s what people really want. The rest they tolerate out of respect for her gigantic talent. And when she stuck to music, there were many magnificent moments. “Starting Here, Starting Now,” the “Funny Girl” suite, “When the Sun Comes Out,” “Children Will Listen,” “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,” and “My Shining Hour” were the musical high points of a concert that was further dampened by the lack of a pre-performance sound check because Ms. Streisand was stuck in traffic. As a result, the acoustics of the first half of the concert were muddy.

True to her show business instincts, she saved the best for last. In her final sprint, she might have a scored a winning touchdown had she not interrupted it with the Bush impersonator. And near the end sabotaged her own glorious performance of “Somewhere” by bringing Il Divo as a robotic harmony chorus.

A poignant moment for those who have followed Ms. Streisand’s career from the beginning was her rendition of (“Have I Stayed) Too Long at the Fair?” a Billy Barnes ballad that she recorded in 1964. Way back then, it was the reflection of an insecure ingénue feeling her first intimations of ennui after too much partying.

Sung four decades later, with just as much passion but an entirely different outlook, Ms. Streisand made it a rhetorical question about her own future. Has she stayed too long at the fair? Despite all the evening’s missteps, the answer is a resounding no.

In an age of instant, throw-away celebrity, true entertainment royalty is getting hard to come by. Columbus received a visit from the queen last night, as Barbra Streisand — looking and sounding every bit the aristocrat — played a packed Value City Arena on the second stop of an extensive American tour, her first in 12 years.

Dressed in a long black sequined gown and 4-inch spiked heels, Streisand dominated both halves of the more than 2 1 /2-hour show.

The arena had a retro look — configured like a giant nightclub, with long, tiered, lighted runways extending well out into the hall and surrounding a full symphony orchestra. A small table with a vase of flowers was placed front and center, and after Streisand came onstage — lifted via a small elevator smack into the middle of a spotlight — she worked this part of the stage, closest to her adoring audience.

"Hello, Columbus," Streisand yelled — as fans screamed "We love you!" back. Then she immediately launched into an upbeat version of Starting Here, Starting Now. The familiar and distinctive voice may have sounded a bit husky at first, but not for long. By the time she got to her third song, the show-stopping The Way We Were, both Streisand and the crowd were well-warmed up.

Streisand certainly gave the outward appearance of polished elegance. But there were amusing reminders of the "funny girl" who started her career playing comedienne Fanny Brice. Moving to the piano at one point, she tried to play a song she had written when she was in her 20s, hit a wrong note, and said, "Oh, s---!" much to crowd’s delight.

Later, she took her shoes off and strode the stage in stocking feet. She made no secret of her need for either reading glasses or the teleprompters placed strategically around the hall — so obvious even some of the crowd could read along. It gave the show a kind of homey feel.

The trip down memory lane took a sharp step back into the present, however, one many in the audience must have been waiting for. As Streisand began the first lines of her song Evergreen, the four young men known as Il Divo appeared behind her — to more cheers from the crowd.

Il Divo and La Diva blended voices beautifully in selections on both halves, and one wished they had sung a few more tunes together. Women in the audience of a certain age no doubt appreciated the way Streisand turned the stereotypical generation gap on its ear, surrounding herself with handsome men probably about half her age.

The four amigos sang on their own on both halves. Four handsome men in tuxedos crooning in foreign languages. Who said romance is dead?

After a long set of ballads at the top of the second half, Streisand threw out an unexpected curve — a visit from President Bush (impersonator Steve Bridges). As a well-known supporter of liberal causes, the singer couldn’t resist a few very light punches at the current administration. Bridges, by the way, has the Dubya down pat, but the bit went on too long.

La Diva and Il Divo finished with a nod toward Leonard Bernstein — a gorgeous rendition of Somewhere from West Side Story.

Streisand is a singular and amazingly accomplished artist. She’s been successful and lauded in two arenas — film and music. She once called herself "an actress who sings."

Better "a singer who acts." It won’t be "the laughter we remember." It’ll be the voice.

Hey Matt! Just wanted to let you know that Barbra did NOT sing "Woman in the Moon" at the Columbus Show. Here's just some little tidbits that I thought I'd share with you....

~ Barbra wore the same two outfits she wore in Philly, the sailor dress and the black dress with the gold earrings and gold necklace. She looked absolutely amazing! Loved the outfits!!
~ She said that she heard that here in Ohio you guys have a thing where if I say "OHI", you guys say "O." But, that was wrong, so someone in the
audience told her and she figured it out. She then yelled "O-H" and the audience yelled back "I-O."
~ She played "Lost Inside of You" on the piano, at one point messing up, and said "Shit!" That got a lot of laughter. She then sang "Ma Premiere Chanson."
~ She asked the audience after the first song of Act 2 if we minded if she took off her shoes. Of course, we didn't care. So, the entire 2nd act she was barefoot.
~ She brought Sammie after the encore, and returned once again after the encore (because the audience was going crazy!) and finished with "Smile."
~ She was very loose and comfortable, and very appreciative of the love from the audience.
~ The show was phenomenal and I am still in shock. It's just now hitting me that I saw Barbra Streisand Live. Thank God I have two more shows in NYC to take it all in.
